Prominent Ear Surgery

The genes we have determine the structure and shape of the organs that make up our body. As the shape of our ears varies from person to person, there are differences between both ears. The prominent ears has a negative effect on the psychological structure especially in children. This causes the child to become introverted and exaggerate the problem in their minds.

They try to grow their hair at later ages and cover their ears with hair and hide the physical appearance of their ears. Although it is suitable for girls, it is not practical for boys.

There are different shapes and numbers of prominent ears. Different methods can be used to fix them. Operational intervention eliminates the appearance of ear and gives it an anatomical appearance.

Today, most surgeons argue that the correction of the ear prior to school age is correct because it will keep the child away from psychological trauma.

The main purpose of the prominent ear operation is to improve the appearance of the ear in a positive way. It is one of the successful plastic surgery operations. It is very unlikely that you will be dissatisfied with the results if you discuss your operation and your expectations with us fully and honestly.

Am I Suitable for This Operation?

Your eligibility for operation can be discussed after an appointment and physical examination in our clinic. Smoking will decrease the amount of blood passing through the blood vessels, so the wound healing will be slow. Aspirin and similar painkillers increase the risk of bleeding; you should stop taking these medications one week before operation. Sometimes it may be necessary to intervene in both ears for symmetry, even if the appearance of the problematic ear is fixed.

What Does Operation Include?

The main purpose of operation is to correct the prominent ear. The method aims to soften and bend the cartilage backwards without disrupting the normal anatomical shape and structure of the ear. Operational intervention is made through an approximately 4.5 cm incision made behind the ear. The scar thus remains behind the ear and is not visible. After the operation is done, sutures are placed in the incision and then cotton is placed in the ear and only the headband is worn. The patient is able to take a shower on the second day.

What Type of Anesthesia is Applied?

Prominent ear operation is usually performed under local anesthesia.

How Long Does The Operation Last?

Operation usually lasts 1-1.5 hours.

Is The Operation Painful?

The first two days you will have pain. However, this pain can be easily controlled with painkillers and it is not an intense pain.

What Happens After Operation?

As mentioned before, after the operation, instead of thick fluffy bandages in the ear, there will be a hair band or tennis band. This band will help the ears maintain their new position during the healing process and ease the weight on the suture. It will reduce the pain and provide comfort while maintaining the new structure of the ear during right or left rotation while sleeping. Although bandage is the most annoying part of this operation for patients, it is inevitable for a good result. The bandage is used all day for 2 weeks and is only used in the night for the next 6 weeks.

What Happens After Operation?

There will be swelling and bruises in the ear after the bandages are removed. Bruising and swelling will stay there about 3 weeks. Although the swelling, it is easily noticeable that the angulation on the ear is fixed.

How is The Scar Like?

It is impossible to notice the leave formed behind the ear.

What Kind of Problems May I Encounter During and After The Operation?

As with all operational procedures, there are risks in prominent ear operations. Risks are minimized by an experienced plastic surgeon. The most common problem after this operation is the irregularities on the cartilage surface. In our method, there is no significant irregularity in the cartilage.

On the following days of operation, bleeding may occur. Despite the meticulous work, small blood vessels may leak and the blood may accumulate under the skin, which may need to be drained out.

Excessive swelling and bruising can cause water to accumulate on the skin (bulla). They disappear spontaneously and fully recover within 4 weeks.

Prominent ear operation has no side effects to hearing. You can minimize all the negative effects that may occur after operation by following our recommendations.

How Long Does It Take Me to Return to Normal?

Most adults can return to work a few days after bandages are removed. However, mild swelling and bruising may stay for 1-2 weeks. Children can go to school a week later provided that they are protected from impacts.
